THERAPEUTIC AFTER SCHOOL SERVICES
The goal of this service is to promote the development of socialization skills that
will allow the child to integrate into community activities once they have successfully
completed the program. The services are based in part on the concepts of Adventure
Based Counseling. ABC promotes the use of cooperative games and activities to physically
and mentally challenge children in a safe, group setting. The program works to increase
the child's ability to develop and maintain peer relationships through activities
which promote communication, cooperation, emotional expression, appreciation for
diversity, and non-violent conflict resolution. The program focuses on assisting
children with social skills deficits related to developmental delays, diagnoses of
Autism or PDD and other related disorders.
Children between the ages of five and thirteen with a DSM IV diagnosis who display
difficulties in these areas. The child must complete a referral and assessment process
to determine appropriateness for the program. The risk of harm to self, others, or
property must be assessed as low or clinically manageable and not requiring a more
restrictive setting.
The program operates 3:30 PM-6:30 PM, Monday, Wednesday, Friday (Ages 9 to 13) and
3:30 PM-6:30 PM, Tuesday, Thursday (Ages 5 to 8) |
