Youth admitted to secure detention are often at great risk for experiencing behavioral
health problems. Without proper treatment and supports, many out h with mental health
disorders are susceptible to exhibiting behavior that is often defined as delinquent
and therefore subject to arrest and detention. In addition, the circumstances and
conditions that occur during their arrest and detention often contribute to the emotional
deterioration of the involved youth.
The ability to provide services in a secure juvenile detention setting requires a
thorough understanding of the procedural, regulatory and legal requirements of relatively
complex systems. Behavioral services must be sensitive to time requirements of the
Court and detention staff. Secure detention occupies a critical juncture in the juvenile
justice process. The environment and interventions it provides set the stage for
the youth's receptivity to subsequent efforts. The justice process truly provides
an opportunity to effectively intervene in the lives of seriously troubled youth.
The opportunity to provide diagnostic services makes effective use of time and resources
during the period of detention to gain valuable information regarding youth.
Three full-time, experienced, master's level clinical case managers work with juveniles
ranging in age from 10 - 18. |
