Course Overview
For many young people, Non-Suicidal Self-Injury represents a complex coping strategy that can signal deeper emotional pain. This training will explore the functions of NSSI, common misconceptions, co-occurring concerns, and trauma-informed approaches to care.
Participants will learn strategies to create safe spaces, build trust and support youth to use healthier ways to cope and regulate emotions.
Objectives
Define Non-Suicidal Self-Injury (NSSI) and differentiate it from suicidal behaviors in clinical and school-based settings.
Identify common functions of and risk factors for NSSI in pre-teens and adolescents, including developmental, relational, and cultural influences.
Recognize signs of co-occurring mental health conditions that may underlie or exacerbate NSSI behaviors.
Apply trauma-informed and evidenced-based strategies for assessing and responding to NSSI across diverse practice settings.

This course is intended for Psychologists, Social Workers, Professional Counselors, Marriage and Family Therapists, School-Based Clinicians, Graduate Students, Behavioral Health Interns and others supporting the mental health and well-being preteens and adolescents.

Your Instructor
Dr. Jennifer Toof is a Licensed Professional Counselor, owner of Trauma Informed Counseling & Consulting, and former CGRC Employee of the Year. Her PhD is in International Psychology with a concentration in trauma services. She is a Certified Trauma Therapist whose expertise includes working with clients who have experienced traumatic and/or depressive symptoms following childbirth. She has presented on this topic for the American Psychological Association and for The Chicago School of Professional Psychology. She is a prolific presenter, has been published in peer-reviewed journals, and is highly active in a number of local, national, and international advocacy efforts.
