Multisystemic Therapy - Child Abuse and Neglect (MST-CAN) Information

What is Multi-Systemic Therapy-CAN (MST-CAN)?

Multi-Systemic Therapy-Child Abused and Neglect (MST-CAN) is an evidence based treatment created for children ages 6-17 years and families that come under the guidance of Child Protective Services (CPS) due to physical abuse and/or neglect. While traditionally, treatment for children experiencing abuse or neglect is focused on the individual. However, research shows that the factors leading to physical abuse and neglect are complex and interconnected, involving family, schools, and communities. MST-CAN provides a holistic approach to keep the child safe and work toward healing the family.

How does MST-CAN work?

Lasting six to nine months, MST-CAN focuses on families, tailoring interventions to the specific risk factors that contribute to child physical abuse and neglect for each individual family. The primary goals of MST-CAN’s is to:

  • Keep families together

  • Prevent abuse and neglect
