Alcohol Tobacco and Other Drug Prevention Programs Information

What does a prevention program do?

Prevention is the action of stopping something before happening or arising. So, Alcohol Tobacco and other Drug Prevention stops drug misuse before it happens. To do so, we help people develop the knowledge, attitudes and skills they need to change behaviors and make healthy choices. At Child Guidance, we provide prevention programs in Delaware and Montgomery counties.

Delaware County ATOD Prevention Program:

In Delaware County, our prevention program includes two programs, Strengthening Families and Project Toward No Drug Abuse, and community outreach and education including the annual One Stride at a Time 5k and additional awareness efforts throughout the year.

Strengthening Families

The Strengthening Families Program is a 14-session, evidence-based parenting skills, children’s social skills, and family life skills training program specifically designed for families. Both parents and children participate in this effective program that improves family relationships, reduces problem behaviors, delinquency and alcohol and drug abuse in children and improve social skills and school performance.

Project Toward No Drug Abuse

Project Toward No Drug Abuse is an effective, interactive substance abuse prevention program that is based on more than two decades of successful research at the University of Southern California. Project Toward No Drug Abuse focuses on three factors that predict tobacco, alcohol, and other drug use, violence-related behaviors and other problem behaviors among youth. The program is created for ages 14-19 and includes 12 sessions, with a minimum of 2 per week.

One Stride at a Time 5k

We hold our annual 5k each October! Join us as we run to stomp out drug and alcohol abuse. The day is a family-and-dog-friendly event where we share healthy resources and run/walk towards a healthier future. To learn more, please visit our 5k page!

ATOD Prevention programs are coordinated by Child Guidance Resource Centers and funded by the Delaware County Department of Human Services, Division of Drug and Alcohol.

Montgomery County ATOD Prevention Program

What does a prevention look like in Montgomery County?

In Montgomery County, our prevention work is a combination of evidence-based programming, caregiver education, school collaboration, and outreach. Through communication across platforms, we work to prevent drug and alcohol misuse before it happens.
