Parent Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT)

What is PCIT?

PCIT addresses problem behaviors in a collaborative, age-appropriate and supportive environment. The program consists of weekly hour-long sessions over a 15–20-week period. An important part of PCIT is empowering the parent and strengthening the child-parent relationship. The clinician stands behind a two-way mirror (or over Zoom) and coaches the caregiver through an earpiece. Children play while the caregiver is coached to play along and comment on the child’s positive behaviors. When challenging behaviors occur, the clinician coaches the how to handle them in real time. PCIT strengthens the caregiver-child relationship by focusing on the power of play and praise without harsh punishments.
